RADIO LAB / THE OFF-GRID FIELD GUIDE
JUNGLE MESH
Stay connected when the mobile jungle goes quiet.
A short message. A small radio. People you know. Discover how MeshCore can add a useful communication layer when mobile service or internet is unavailable β and why it is fun to use today.

Short messages, no SIM
Your radio sends the message. A compatible phone can act as the screen and keyboard.
Build connections first
Agree who you will contact, where and when. A network is more useful when someone is listening.
Test before you need it
Try your actual route and backup power. A dot on a map is not a successful conversation.
THE JUNGLE WAY
No panic. No bunker. Just radio.
Preparedness starts with practising together, not buying a box and leaving it in a drawer. Try a message from home to a friend, take a radio on a walk and find out what actually works where you live. The bananas can stay in the fruit bowl.
LoRa, MeshCore, mesh⦠in normal words.
LoRa = the radio technology
A way for small radios to exchange small amounts of data with relatively little power. Think short text, not video calls or a replacement for home broadband.
MeshCore = the software
Firmware runs on the radio; an app can provide the messaging interface. Compatible radios with matching settings communicate directly or through repeaters.
Mesh = connected radio points
A node is simply a device in the network. If a direct link is out of reach, suitably placed repeaters may carry the message onward. Every link still needs power and radio coverage.
Which banana does what?
Companion
Your talking banana. Usually paired to a phone over Bluetooth for sending and receiving. Some devices have their own screen and keyboard. A normal companion is not a dedicated repeater.
Repeater
The relay monkey. Forwards suitable messages and benefits from a good antenna position and reliable power. A device at a friendβs house only extends the network if its role and location support that.
Room server
An optional Jungle noticeboard that stores room messages for later retrieval. You do not need one for basic direct messaging.
The installed firmware determines the role. Check the supported hardware and firmware before buying or flashing. This MeshCore companion is a radio device, not the DX Jungle browser/rig-control Companion.
Follow a message through the jungle
For a typical phone-based setup: phone β Bluetooth β companion β radio. Close enough? The receiving companion gets it directly. No repeater hops required.
- You + companion
- Repeater A
- Repeater B
- Friend + companion
This example has two repeater hops. Each repeater forwards the message over another radio link. Extra hops can extend the route, but do not guarantee delivery. A tired battery in the middle can still stop the banana express.
Meet the jungle before you join it.
The LoRa Banana Radar is our live online tool, combining public Meshtastic and MeshCore observations. Explore your area, select MeshCore, then filter repeaters, companions or room servers.
A cluster is a group, not a route
A yellow β58β groups 58 displayed nodes at that zoom level. Zoom in to inspect them. It does not mean 58 repeaters or 58 reachable stations.
Last seen is not guaranteed availability
An observation can be old, incomplete or missing. Check the node timestamp and the separate feed status. Only publicly reported locations can appear.
Online radar β off-grid radio
This website and its feeds need internet. A compatible local radio link can work without it. The map does not certify coverage or prove that a route survives a power cut.
Open LoRa Banana Radar βYour first Jungle field test
Start small: two compatible companions and someone to exchange messages with. One device is useful for exploring an existing local community; two let you test together.
Choose together
Check the local community, supported devices, matching radio settings and suitable hardware for your region.
Prepare while online
Install the app and firmware, pair the radios, exchange contacts and send a short message both ways. Include antenna, case and battery when comparing total cost.
Try the real route
Test home β family, outdoors and indoors. Turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi while keeping Bluetooth enabled for a phone-based companion. Check that you are testing the radio path.
Practise a simple plan
Agree a check-in time, a meeting point and what to do if no reply arrives. Test batteries and backup power for phones, radios and any repeaters you rely on.
βAll quiet here. The monkeys are fine. Banana stocks holding.β
Useful backup. Honest expectations.
A living-room radio will not cover a whole province. Terrain, buildings, antenna, height, interference, settings and working repeaters all matter. More devices alone do not make a reliable network. Treat this as an extra communication method, with no delivery guarantee and no replacement for official emergency services.
A few questions before you peel
Does it work without internet?
The radio path can. A phone-based companion still needs Bluetooth and power. Downloads, setup and the online radar may need internet, so prepare beforehand.
How far will it reach?
There is no honest universal distance. Test the actual locations and conditions. A useful repeater position often matters more than buying another radio.
Can I use it for calls, photos or broadband?
Start with short text messages. LoRa has limited capacity; it is not a substitute for a mobile voice or internet connection. Keep messages useful and brief.
Are messages private?
Do not treat a public channel as private. Access and encryption depend on the feature and configuration. Share sensitive information only after understanding who can read it; a public map is a separate view of advertised locations.
FUTURE IDEA Β· NOT FOR SALE YET
Jungle Mesh bananas? Still growing.
We would like to explore our own Jungle Mesh devices: enclosures, configured radios and useful repeaters. We may build and sell them in the future. There is no product launch, order option, price or delivery promise today. For now, we are learning, experimenting and helping the jungle grow.
The best mesh starts with people.
Make your first connection before you need a backup. No doomsday sales pitch. Just radio, good neighbours and the occasional relay monkey.
Keep exploring
